GRAFFITI, SOUTH BANK

GRAFFITI, SOUTH BANK

Graffiti on the concrete walls of the Queen Elizabeth Hall undercroft. The subterranean spaces with their expanses of concrete have attracted skateboarders and graffiti artists for many years. The spray-paint 'tags' are currently tolerated here, but quickly removed if they stray beyond this undercroft. The central column has the face of Andre the Giant by the American street artist Shepard Fairey, aka 'Obey', who urges graffiti artists not to come across as 'a bunch of vandals', but to try and create support for public artistic expression. Digital image dated 29th December 2007.From the Graffiti Gallery, recording Lambeth's urban art.
