A horse and cart in the non-ferrous metals yard of Joseph Warrington Ltd, 147 Vauxhall Walk. Stuart Myland recalls: 'I spent time there as a child on some Saturday mornings as my father worked in the office. The chimney visible was the zinc melting furnace where zinc was made into ingots. To the right hidden behind the gate, was another furnace where lead was similarly treated. In the foreground can be seen the weighbridge where the carts and lorries were weighed to determine the weight of the scrap metal received. There was also a workshop for the cleaning and sorting of metals on the left, and the end buidling was primarily used for the cutting and sorting of cable and metal swarf from engineering firms, with gulleys below to collect the lubricants. Across the road was the Ferrous Metal Yard....for the scrap iron and also had a crane and a hydraulic crusher for crushing the metals. The yard closed in 1970 as a result of the compulsory purchase of the land by the Council for the open space project.
