A Civilian artwork at the Cans Festival, Leake Street, Waterloo. Civilian, aka Tom Civil (born c.1978), is part of the thriving street art scene in Melbourne, Australia. He began painting with stencils in 2001 and has progressed to include gallery shows, although prefers 'Empty Shows' - illegal exhibitions held in derelict buildings and feels that "street art is an important and necessary part of society".The Festival, which ran from 3rd-5th May, was organised by Pictures on Walls and Blank Expression with the permission of the British Rail Residuary Board and Department of Transport. It was the world's largest exhibition of stencilled street art, and featured over 40 international artists, attracting 30,000 visitors. Digital image dated 7th May 2008.
