Brixton Advice Centre at 165 Railton Road, Brixton/ Herne Hill. The blue plaque marks the former home of the Marxist, historian and Guardian cricket correspondent CLR James, who was born Cyril Lionel Robert James in Trinidad on 4 January 1901. James moved to England in 1932, initially living in Lancashire were he wrote 'The Case for West Indian Self-Government' which was published in 1933 by Leonard Woolf. In 1938 he wrote 'The Black Jacobins' on the Haitian slave revolt before moving to the USA, where he lectured on political issues and published books about politics, notably 'The Revolutionary Answer to the Negro Problem in the USA' (1948). Here James lived until he was expelled for 'anti-American activities' in 1953. As an advocate of de-colonialisation, he returned to Trinidad to help the government, but was expelled in the 60's after being imprisoned. He returned to Britain where he died in May 1989.Digital image dated 2nd February 2008.
