NORWOOD CEMETERY, NORWOOD HIGH STREET, WEST NORWOOD

Graves and memorials in Norwood Cemetery. The Cemetery, off Norwood High Street, was established as the South Metropolitan Cemetery in 1837 and designed by the company architect, Sir William Tite, who is also buried here. The grave in the foreground is that of Dr Gideon Algernon Mantell (1790-1852) who was prominent in the then new science of palaeontology. He discovered and named the iguanadon dinosaur, fragments of which he found during a fossil-collecting trip with his wife near Cuckfield in Sussex. Photograph by Eric de Mare.
