CORPUS CHRISTI, BRIXTON HILL

CORPUS CHRISTI, BRIXTON HILL

Exterior of Corpus Christi Roman Catholic church on the corner of Trent Road and Brixton Hill. Bethel House was purchased for £3,550 and this church was built on the front garden, the foundation stone laid by Bishop Butt in 1886. The architect was John Francis Bentley (1839-1902) the designer of Westminster Cathedral, and the first phase was opened in 1887. The building was later enlarged with transepts in 1903-4, modifying Bentley's design, but the nave, aisles and tower were never built. Bomb damage in World War II caused some of his stained glass to be lost, although the building is now listed Grade II*.
