GERTRUDE MARTIN, MASTER MOSAICIST

Gertrude Martin and her sister Margaret at work on the mosaics for the Baptistry of St Anne's Cathedral in Belfast. Designed by Sir Charles Nicholson to represent the Creation, the mosaics took 7 years to complete. Gertrude lived at No.24 St James's Crescent (then Road), Brixton, from 1903-1952 and was Britain's only female Master Mosaicist. Her work also includes the mosaics at Westminster Cathedral, St John's Angell Town and the Houses of Parliament. She died on 21st February 1952 and is buried in Lambeth Cemetery.
