View upstream of the Thames from Vauxhall Stairs looking towards Battersea, with a boatman about to collect two finely-dressed passengers. The stairs were for many years the main access point by water to the nearby Vauxhall Gardens. The Gothick building on the embankment is on the site of the later Burnett's Distillery, and the summerhouse beyond associated with Belmont (Brunswick) House. Vauxhall Bridge was in 1811-16 built across the Thames approximately where the sailing barge is.Watercolour by William Marlow.
