Thomas Cranmer, was a Cambridge theologian who became Archbishop of Canterbury in 1533. As archbishop to Henry VIII he held considerable power, but upon the succession to the throne of Queen Mary in 1553, he was detained at Lambeth Palace virtually as a prisoner before being sent to the Tower. He was sentenced to death and died at the stake in Oxford in 1556. Engraved by H.B.Hall from a drawing by J. Childe after an original portrait, published May 1839.
