Children from the Henry Fawcett School, Kennington, at Templecombe station during wartime evacuation to Shillingstone in Dorset. The first girl on the left is Jessie McLaren from Vauxhall, who recalls being billeted in the Baptist Chapel upon arrival in Shillingstone. She then lived for 2½ years with Annie Burgoyne in Ivy Cottage during which time she became an orphan and as a result, her sister brought Jessie back to live with her in Brixton, declining adoption offers. Concerns over safety after the Acre Lane bombing meant she was sent back to Shillingstone, staying with Mrs Mundy until the end of the war.Image by kind permission of Mrs Jessie Woolhead.
