Jessie McLaren (right) a Vauxhall wartime evacuee in Dorset with her friend Joyce. She was one of many children from the Henry Fawcett School, Kennington, evacuated to Shillingstone in Dorset. Jessie recalls being billeted in the Baptist Chapel upon arrival in the village before living with Annie Burgoyne in Ivy Cottage. She became an orphan with the death of her mother and as a result, her sister brought Jessie back to live with her in Brixton, declining adoption offers. Concerns over safety after the Acre Lane bombing meant she was returned to Shillingstone, staying with Mrs Mundy until the end of the war.Photograph by Charles Stride and by kind permission of Mrs Jessie Woolhead.
