MISBEHAVIOUR AT VAUXHALL GARDENS

MISBEHAVIOUR AT VAUXHALL GARDENS

Two newspaper clippings on misbehaviour at Vauxhall Gardens:The first dated May 1754 and from The Christian's Magazine, reports a riot by almost 150 'young bloods' against the actions of the proprietor Mr Tyers to prevent indecent behaviour in the 'dark walks'. The second from 1738 records a visit by a 'Virago in an Amazonian Dress...attended by a Coffee-Boy in the Habit of a Knight Errant'. Her indecent, nauseous behaviour and dress lead to her eviction with 'pleasure' by fellow revellers, before the Master of the Gardens could send his 'Gentlemen of the Black Staves' to do so.
