ELIAS ASHMOLE

Elias Ashmole (1617-1692) attorney and antiquarian, lived in South Lambeth and was a friend of his adjacent neighbour John Tradescant the Younger, from whom he obtained by deed of gift the contents of Tradescant's Ark, a 'cabinet of curiosities' and thought to be Britain's first museum.
