Elias Ashmole (1617-1692) attorney and antiquarian, lived in South Lambeth and was a friend of his adjacent neighbour John Tradescant the Younger, from whom he obtained by deed of gift the contents of Tradescant's Ark, a 'cabinet of curiosities' and thought to be Britain's first museum. This collection he subsequently bequeathed to Oxford University and founded in his name the Ashmolean, the first public museum. Engraving bound in a Manning & Bray volume VI, 1814.
