BRIXTON HERON SCULPTURE BY MAGGI HAMBLING, BRIXTON

The Brixton Heron, a sculpture by the Clapham-based artist Maggie Hambling, was unveiled on 15th July 2010 above the Prince & Dex nightclub (formerly Prince of Wales public house) at the corner of Brixton Road and Coldharbour Lane. The 3-metre high sculpture was commissioned to celebrate completion of the Brixton regeneration project by Lambeth Council and was made in Aldeburgh, Suffolk, by Sam & Dennis Pegg. Ms Hambling noted, "I've lived around the area for years. When I went to Camberwell Art College - I think that was 1964 - I lived on Coldharbour Lane and one of the things I always loved was the diverse community in Brixton. So that's why I immediately thought of a weather vane because it reflects the many directions from which the town's residents have come."Digital photograph dated 7th August 2011.
