RICHARD MANKS’ 1,000 MILE WALK, OVAL, KENNINGTON

Richard Manks the pedestrian, completing his thousanth mile on Kennington Oval. Mank's endurance feat required him to complete 1,000 miles in 1,000 consecutive half hours. He began on Friday 10th October 1851, completing the task on 31st October in front of 3,000 spectators. He averaged between 14-16 minutes per mile, with the remaining minutes of each half hour being used for sleeping, meals, a change of clothing, ablutions etc. His diet consisted of game, beef, mutton, strong beef tea, old ale and tea with brandy at night. With just 9 miles to go he 'refused to rise and cried like a child'. But he was persuaded by the time-keeper to complete the challenge. Physically by the end his 'limbs were in great pain with sores and blisters on his feet'.Engraving from the Illustrated London News.
