TOLLGATE, WATERLOO BRIDGE

TOLLGATE, WATERLOO BRIDGE

Pedestrians using the toll gate on Waterloo Bridge. The accompanying text states: 'The great characteristic of this bridge is its perfect flatness, in which it greatly resembles its own shareholders. The toll house is a snug retreat; but as the occupant of it is necessarily obliged to remain on the outside of it in all weathers, its delights can scarcely be appreciated by the official resident. Waterloo Bridge is peculiarly adapted for sentimental life-haters, and the toll gives it a select air, which renders it preferable to the others'. Engraving after Landells from 'Punch' magazine, dated 1842.
