An advertisement dated 1786 for the Stockwell Academy: 'Board and education at Stockwell in Surrey, a very rural village about three miles and a half from the Standard, Cornhill. Young gentlemen are genteely boarded, expeditiously instructed, and affectionately treated by James Adams. Two assistants, one French, constantly board in the house. The limited number of pupils is thirty-six. There are two playgrounds, the longest about an acre.'
