A 1786 newspaper advertisement from an unknown paper, announcing the opening of the Grand Temple of Flora, No.20 Mount Row, Lambeth. The attractions listed included a curious grotto with a 'venerable' hermit, winter garden, spring garden, hot house and grand summer garden with an automaton gardener who converses fluently and will 'answer any question'. It was later noted that the gardens 'like the rest, became a place of assignation for loose and disolute people and was ultimately supressed'. The gardens appear to have operated for ten years until 1796 when Mr Gist, the proprietor, was sent to Kings Bench Prison for keeping a disorderly house.
