SOUTH LAMBETH WATERWORKS, KENNINGTON

SOUTH LAMBETH WATERWORKS, KENNINGTON

The reservoir pools of the South London Waterworks adjacent to the Oval, Kennington. The water intake was from the Thames at high tide via the Effra (also known as Vauxhall Creek) and the Pump House on the left lifted the water into the reservoirs for it to be gravity-fed into neighbouring homes and businesses. The venture, begun in 1807, was later amalgamated with the Vauxhall Waterworks Company, but due to a polluted water supply the site was deemed unviable and sold in 1847 to the Phoenix Gas Company.Oil on panel by unknown artist.
