The soap making at the works of Messrs B.T. & W. Hawes in Commercial Road, Waterloo. Here the soap made from tallow and alkali is taken from the coppers into the frame room and poured into the wooden frames stacked to 10 or 12 feet high. Once solidified, the rectangles are removed and stacked for cutting into slices about 3 inches thick by two men drawing a wire through the soap. It was noted Mr Hawes introduced into the London market ash from the burning of kelp as a source of carbonate of soda (the alkali). From The Penny Magazine, January 1842
