Driving the tunnel of the now Northern underground line. The text states: 'The introduction of the hydraulic lift....has made the depth of our underground railway a matter of trivial importance....the new Southern Subway, which shortly will be all ablaze with electric light, and busily humming with the movement of electric trains whirling down from near the Monument, underneath the bed of the river, and out into the Borough, down past the Elephant and Castle, and away to Clapham.'From Cassell's Saturday Journal, 12th July 1890
