Two World War I DCM medal winners who were neighbours from Wake Street in Lambeth. Sergt. John Messenger of No.33, aged 33 and attached to the Middlesex Regiment, received the award for disregarding 'personal safety to bring in wounded' during a battle. Sergt. William Tyler, a machine gunner of the 1st East Lancashire Regiment, saved an important position. Both men were promoted on the battle field to sergent.
