NOTABLE LAMBETH GEORGES: TEMPERANCE MOVEMENT

An early photograph of seven Lambeth Georges, a 'notable septette of teetotallers' in the Temperance Movement which had its origins in 1837 with meetings on Kennington Common. They are; George Howlett Snr (a coal merchant), George Campbell of Fentiman Road, George Howlett Jnr (the 'Coke King' and Alderman), George Pritchard a Lambeth Guardian, George Johnson a jeweller, George Thornelow a plumber and 'good Templar' and Rev. George Murphy associated with the Surrey Chapel and Hawkstone Hall. Reprinted in Brixton Free Press, dated 5th December 1913.
