Lilian Baylis (1874 - 1937) born in Marylebone, she spent much of her life in Lambeth working at the Old Vic from 1898. Niece of Emma Cons. She introduced the first opera at the Old Vic in 1913 In 1925 Lilian launched a fund raising effort to get Sadlers Wells re-established in which opera could develop. It was opened in 1931, instituting the beginning of the Vic-Wells Association. She set both the Old Vic and Sadlers Wells on the course of success, which they enjoy today. Ref. 12/951/ Old Vic/Box1.
