The Stockwell Orphanage was founded in 1867 by Charles Spurgeon and designed by James Cubitt and Alfred White. Initially for 500 boys, girls were admitted in 1880. This view taken looking roughly eastwards, shows the boys' houses during winter-time with their schoolrooms on the top floor. The children were evacuated to Surrey during World War II and did not return. In 1960 the buildings were demolished by the LCC and replaced with Stockwell High School.
