Flying Bomb incident which caused 72 fatalities in Acre Lane, Brixton on 28th June 1944, showing rescue operations and damage done to the 8th Church of Christ and Jaxsnax, opposite Lambeth Town Hall.

Mr P L Taylor recalls: I worked at Estcott's Motor Engineers and when a raid was in progress a klaxon was out in Acre Lane warning of any danger. I walked a 12 ft wall as lookout and pressed the alarm button for any danger. On this lunchtime the alarm went and we knew that the doodlebugs were on fixed approach lines and watch that area. I saw a dot in the distance which was a doodlebug travelling at speed and it was coming down lower and lower. I pressed the hooter and it was about 100 feet up, and I could see the strange German lettering quite distinctly. It got about 300 yards from where I was and coming from the direction of Streatham, it lifted and banked up over the roofs and then rolled and hit Jaxsnax. We helped the rescue which was horrendous'.
