ALFORD HOUSE YOUTH CLUB, AVELINE STREET, KENNINGTON

Alford House Club Photograph by Frank Manning and dated 20th July 1980. Alford House was founded in 1884 by Frank Briant, who later became the Liberal Member of Parliament for Vauxhall. Initially the club had rooms at the Beaufoy School on Newport Street, Lambeth as well as premises in Lambeth Walk. The building here formally belonged to the Moffatt Institute and gifted to given to the club by the London Congregational Union in 1949 and, after repairing wartime bomb-damage, the club relocated here in 1950. It's main purpose is to promote the well-being, offer training, and recreation of the young people of the borough.. ID: IV/362/F200680

Manning Photographers was founded in the late 1940s by James Manning, who was later joined by his son Frank. The studio operated from 1952 onwards in Windmill Row, Kennington and continued until 2022. Their extensive photographic archive of approximately 500,000 images was gifted to Lambeth Archives by Frank & Sandra Manning.
