ARTHUR ANDERSON

Arthur Anderson, (1792-1868), started from humble beginnings and worked his way up to become the partner of the Wilcox & Anderson, Shipping Agency in his thirties. He later formed the Peninsular Steam Navigation Company which developed into the P & O shipping line, and was director of many other companies including the Crystal Palace Company. His many philanthropic activities included funding the building of the Norwood Working Men's Institute, which opened in 1859. He and his wife lived in Norwood Grove near Streatham Common.
