ASTLEY’S ROYAL AMPHITHEATRE, WESTMINSTER BRIDGE ROAD

The theatre was built in 1769 by Philip Astley, who established the first circus consisting of a variety of performers and acrobatic displays. The building seen here was destroyed by fire on the morning of 8th June 1841 and rebuilt in 1842. It was the third fire to occur at the theatre, which was finally demolished in 1893. The site is now marked by St.Thomas' Hospital.
