Stanley Rothwell at Lambeth Schools Depot in South Lambeth Road with two women Auxillary Transport Service (ATS) drivers, one from Guernsey and the other from Canada. Those civilians not enlisted in the armed forces were encouraged to join various Civil Defence organisations that also included; the Air Raid Precaution (ARP), Auxillary Fire Service (AFS), the Police Reserve and the Auxillary Ambulance Service. Stanley Rothwell was an artist and a male model before the war and joined the ARP section of Lambeth's Civil Defence service in 1939. He wrote of his wartime experiences in his memoir, 'Lambeth at War' published in 1981. From the Lambeth Archives Home Front project 2005.
