Workers in a South Lambeth boneworks. With 10,000 tons of beef, pork and mutton eaten per week in London, according to this article in the Illustrated London News, much waste was produced. These works processed the bones into useful products - some were ground for manure, fatty matter was boiled from the bone and adapted for soap manufacturing. Large bones were bleached and shipped to France where they were made into toothbrushes, knife handles, combs, etc.
