BOY RAISING THE FLAG, WEST NORWOOD: WORLD WAR II

Bernie Bullbrook raising the flag at the family home in Selsdon Road, West Norwood, during World War II. It was situated in the back garden and flew from dawn to dusk. In 1939 aged seven, he was evacuated but was very homesick, as he recalls: "I was totally on my own with a label around my neck, being put on a train down to King's Gate, West Worthing; not knowing whether I was ever going to see my parents again. My strategy that I learnt was that bed-wetters tended to be sent home. So I used this particular strategy and it worked. I managed to get sent home by Christmas. It was rather uncomfortable but it worked." Digital image by kind permission of Bernie Bullbrook. From the Lambeth Archives Home Front project 2005.
