CHILDREN IN OLD PARADISE STREET, LAMBETH: WORLD WAR II

John Whitehorn and Alan Pocknell in the garden of 8 Old Paradise Street, Lambeth, the Whitehorn home. John was three years old when the war began and remembers sheltering in the basement during air raids, the house's internal walls and windows were blown out during one bombing. The Whitehorn's grew potatoes and carrots in the garden and occasionally received eggs from their next door neighbour who kept chickens, John recalls that rabbit stew was often on the menu.Digital image by kind permission of John Whitehorn.
