CHRIST CHURCH AND UPTON CHAPEL, KENNINGTON ROAD, LAMBETH

CHRIST CHURCH AND UPTON CHAPEL, KENNINGTON ROAD, LAMBETH

View south across Kennington Road to Christ Church and Upton Chapel. The church was badly damaged by bombs during World War II, as was the nearby Upton Baptist Chapel in Lambeth Road. The site was redeveloped in the 1960s as a chapel for joint worship with offices above. Christ Church was originally opened in 1876 and the Lincoln Tower (left) was paid for mostly by Americans. Rowland Hill who founded the old Surrey Chapel in Blackfriars Road was reburied beneath the tower.
