CHRISTIAN CLIMATE ACTION PROTEST, LAMBETH PALACE

CHRISTIAN CLIMATE ACTION PROTEST, LAMBETH PALACE

A Christian Climate Action protest at Lambeth Palace during the 2022 Lambeth Conference, highlighting the danger to the Sudd, Africa's largest wetlands, due to drainage and oil exploration. Some of the Anglican bishops stood with the protesters, including the Most Rev. Moses Deng Bol, Archbishop of Northern Bahr el Ghazal Internal Province and Bishop of Wau Diocese, Episcopal Church of South Sudan (Anglican Communion), and Church of England bishops attending the 2022 Lambeth Conference at Lambeth Palace. Archbishop Moses Deng Bol recalls, "There was a proposal for dredging of the White Nile tributaries by the Egyptian Government in 2022 so that more water can flow to Egypt. So this was the main threat to the SUDD as this action could make it dry." The partially-constructed, Egyptian-funded Jonglei Canal, was planned to divert the water of the Nile away from the Sudd, threatening the vast ecosystem. Although the project has stalled, completion still remains a possibility.
