CRYSTAL PALACE GLASS TOWER PROPOSAL,

CRYSTAL PALACE GLASS TOWER PROPOSAL,

A proposal for the conversion of the Great Exhibition building into a 1,000ft high tower with almost 50 floors, including a 44ft diameter clock, to commemorate the 'great event of the year 1851'. One of the proposers, Charles Burton, wrote; 'there was never so favourable an opportunity of erecting so gigantic a tower at so comparatively trifling a cost'. This was the most ambitious of several proposals for reusing the exhibition building, which was eventually remodelled to form the Crystal Palace at Sydenham. Engraved by C.D.Laing after a drawing by Charles Burton.
