Private Ernest Hamley on duty at Solingen-Remscheid in West Germany, where he was responsible for guarding war criminals, and also worked in displaced persons' camps immediately after the war. Ernest was a teenage soldier, called up in 1944 aged 17 years and sent on active duty to Germany with the 1st Battalion of the Highland Light Infantry. He was wounded in the Reischwald forest during Operation Veritable, one of the last battles of the war.Digital image by kind permission of Ernest Hamley.
