FESTIVAL OF BRITAIN FURNISHING DESIGNS, SOUTH BANK, WATERLOO

Furnishing designs for the Regatta Restaurant at the Festival of Britain on the South Bank, from the 'Souvenir Book of Crystal Designs' published by HMSO in 1951. Twenty-eight leading British manufacturers worked for the Festival Pattern Group over 18-months prior on a programme of design development for the Festival. These products were all decorated with patterns derived from crystal structure diagrams - maps recording the arrangement of the atoms in particular materials. The two designs here were produced by; (red) James Templeton & Co Ltd, a carpet designed by G Brown based on Insulin and (grey) wallpaper by John Line & Sons, made to William Odell's design based also on Insulin.
