GEORGE TINWORTH, DOULTON SCULPTOR

GEORGE TINWORTH, DOULTON SCULPTOR

George Tinworth (1843 - 1913) was a ceramic sculptor born at 6 Milk Street in Walworth, the son of a wheelwright. He attended the Lambeth School of Art, recalling in 1896, "I had to keep the whole affair dark from my father. Indeed, I went to Lambeth School of Art of a night for months before he knew anything about it. He used to ask my mother where I was, but happily for me she always refused to gratify his curiosity". In 1867 he was offered employment at the Doulton factory in Lambeth and progressed to become one of their leading sculptors in terracotta and stoneware. From a boxed set of glass negatives produced by Doulton & Co Ltd, Lambeth, illustrating 'Tinworth Panels'. ID: GNS/1/1
