Mr J. H. Greathead was the engineer involved in the 'gigantic and intricate piece of engineering work' that resulted in the first electric railway of the City and South London Railway, later the Northern Line.  He was amongst others present at the inaugural function where the Prince of Wales turned the key and started the current.  Mr Greathead, who specialised in constructing tunnels, was responsible for the first Thames subway.  He lived in Leigham Court Road, and is buried in West Norwood Cemetery.
