JOHN OAKEY AND SONS, BLACKFRIARS ROAD

The original premises of John Oakey and Sons, Wellington Emery Glass & Black Lead Mills, 172 Blackfriars Road. The firm relocated to land acquired in 1872 and previously held by the Royal Female Orphan Asylum in Lambeth. By 1874 the factory and mills were erected to the design of Messrs. Parr & Strong at a cost of almost £15,000. They became renowned as manufacturers of emery cloth, abrasive papers, polishes for domestic and industrial applications.
