JOHN OAKEY & SONS LTD., WESTMINSTER BRIDGE ROAD, LAMBETH

In 1872 the firm acquired the land previously held by the Royal Female Orphan Asylum and by 1874 the factory and mills were erected to the design of Messrs. Parr & Strong at a cost of almost £15,000. The building became known as the 'Wellington Mills'. Partially redeveloped post-war after bomb damage, the buildings were demolished and replaced with the Wellington Mills Estate housing, opening in 1976. Christ Church can be seen on the right. From 'Oakey Abrasives & Polishes'.
