John Shore, Lord Teignmouth (1751-1834), was a quiet, unassuming former Governor-General of India. As a member of the Clapham Sect, Shore worked with William Wilberforce to further the cause for the abolition of slavery. He is shown here aged 81 and resided on Clapham Common South Side. His mansion was also once the home of Samuel Thornton, and was demolished for the redevelopment that included the building of St Mary's Roman Catholic church in 1849-51. Engraved by W. Walker after drawing by J. Richmond, published 1843.Featured in 2007 commemoration: 'Lambeth and the Abolition: Bicentenary of the Abolition of the Slave Trade 1807-2007'.
