LETTER REGARDING CHILD EVACUEE: WORLD WAR II

LETTER REGARDING CHILD EVACUEE: WORLD WAR II

Letter to Mrs McDonald in Lambeth from Mrs K Grant of Bognor Regis to inform her that she has her daughter Alice billetted with her as an evacuee. Children over the age of 5 were evacuated away from London because of the threat posed by air raids. She was initially evacuated to Littlehampton as she recalled in 2005: "Then they decided we weren't safe there so they took us to Bognor Regis. I went to another lady, and her daughter, Mrs Grant; I remember her, ever so kind; they were really lovely to me. She was an old lady and sometimes she didn't want to go to the air raid shelter - there was a little park, a green with the air raid shelters, and we were allocated the middle one. And one night she said she didn't feel well enough, so we went under the stairs; and there was a direct hit on the middle shelter! And the next day she wrote to my mum and said come and bring Alice home; that was 1940."Digital image by kind permission of Alice McDonald. From the Lambeth Archives Home Front project 2005.
