NEVILLE’S BAKERY, MILKWOOD ROAD, HERNE HILL

Aerial view of Neville's Bakery in Milkwood Road, Herne Hill. The housing was part of a large development in the 1870s, providing homes for 3,000 people and the bakery provided employment for many of the local residents. The garden in the foreground was created by the bakery for the use of employees. The area suffered bombing during World War II due to its proximity to the railway lines and post-war temporary prefabricated housing is visible along Heron Road to the left, as well as in Lowden Road at the top of the picture. The site is now occupied by a school and an open space.
