OVAL GAS WORKS, KENNINGTON

Gas works holder number 3 (Clayton) and part of the booster system at the Oval Gas works, Kennington. The site was formerly used by the South London Waterworks who from 1807 supplied water taken from the Thames and Vauxhall Creek. They later became the Vauxhall Waterworks Company, but gave up the site in 1847 when it was purchased by the Phoenix Gas Company.Photograph by M.D.Trace, dated 3rd April 1973.
