Extract from Minutes of Evidence taken before the Select Committee of the House of Commons on the 'West Coast of Africa'. Lord Stanley Chairman. Query 1956 - "What policy would you recommend, from your observation and experience on the Coast, as best calculated to promote civilization in Africa and put down the Slave Trade?' Capt. Bailey - "It would be best to increase the legitimate trade in Palm Oil". Query 2526 - "Then all those persons whom they would either have killed or sold to slavery, are now employed in the Palm Oil Trade?". Commander Broadhurst - "That is what I believe".
