Messrs. Petto, Brassey and Betts, Civil Engineering Contractors. A crowd of workmen waiting outside contractors' office to be selected for work building a railway across Crimea. The Crimean War had been declared against the Russians late in the summer of 1854 and a severe winter had worsened the situation for British troops stationed there.Ref: SP12/64/CON.1
