RESCUE BY FIREMEN, SUSSEX ROAD, BRIXTON

Firemen Mitchell and Westhrop from Ferndale Road Fire Station are commemorated in this engraving for their 'plucky rescue' of a 9-month old boy. The fire began in a laundry run by Mr & Mrs Tadman at 71 Sussex Road and the two firemen climbed through an upstairs window to save their son. From the Illustrated London News, dated 12th January 1888.
