The Royal Vauxhall Tavern in Kennington Road is London's longest surviving gay venue, pre-dating Vauxhall's now popular 'Gay Village'. The public house opened in 1863 and became a music hall venue. During the 1940s it began to attract a gay clientele because of cross-dressing performances on the stage. It survived a demolition threat in the mid-1990s from Lambeth Council for the construction of a shopping centre and it was threatened with closure again in 2005. However the pub was bought at auction by two gay businessmen, Paul Oxley and James Lindsay, and continues its tradition of lively entertainment. Digital image dated 15th July 2008.
